Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of leaving Kolkata and travelling to Jhargram, allegedly to avoid facing the family of Abhaya, a doctor who died after an incident at RG Kar Medical College last year. In a statement made on Wednesday, Adhikari claimed the Chief Minister was “so scared of Abhaya’s parents” that she had “run away to Jhargram to save herself.”
The incident involving the woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College occurred a year ago, and Adhikari alleged that those responsible have not yet been punished. He stated that Abhaya’s family now intends to visit Nabanna, the state secretariat, to seek answers directly from the Chief Minister, who also holds the Health portfolio in the state government.
Adhikari alleged that in anticipation of the family’s move, the Chief Minister scheduled an administrative programme in Jhargram. He commented, “To ensure that no one topples the Chief Minister’s chair on the 14th floor of the blue building in Howrah, the entire state police has been deployed on the streets.”
A key security meeting was held on Wednesday evening at Shibpur Police Lines in Howrah. According to information available, this meeting was held as part of preparations for the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ planned for August 9. A police briefing was conducted at 5 PM on August 6, and senior IPS officers from various parts of the state were present.
Adhikari questioned the role of the police in this context, stating that they were engaged in protecting the position of the ruling establishment rather than addressing public demands for justice. No official statement has yet been released by the Chief Minister or the state government in response to these allegations. The incident and the opposition’s protest plan have added to the ongoing political tensions in the state.
