West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during her road journey to Jhargram on Wednesday, instructed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Medinipur not to evict any resident or shopkeeper for the upcoming Kangsabati bridge construction. The order was issued after she halted her convoy to interact with local residents gathered along the roadside.
The bridge is set to be constructed over the Kangsabati River in Medinipur, with funds already allocated for the project. Residents and shopkeepers living near the Shilabati riverbank had expressed fear of eviction due to the proposed construction. Upon receiving their concerns, the Chief Minister stated clearly in front of them that no one should be evicted for the project.
Local people had assembled along the roadside after learning about the Chief Minister’s travel route. When Mamata Banerjee stopped to engage with them, they requested her to prevent any displacement. Responding to the appeal, she issued immediate instructions to the officials and also assured that rehabilitation would be arranged if required.
Following the interaction, the Chief Minister visited an 'Amader Para Amader Samadhan' government service camp to review its functioning. She then continued her journey to Jhargram, where she is scheduled to lead a 2.8-kilometre march from Rajbari Crossing to Panchmatha as part of a language movement programme.
