No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Ajit Haldar, a resident of Netaji Subhas Road in Behala, died on August 6, a day after undergoing angioplasty at Narayan Memorial Hospital. He was admitted on August 4 following complaints of chest pain. According to his family, the hospital charged ₹11,000 for various tests before admission, despite the patient holding a Swasthya Sathi card. The family claimed they were informed on admission that Haldar would undergo a surgery on August 5.
On the morning of August 5, doctors performed an angioplasty. As per the family, doctors informed them that stent insertion was not required after the procedure. The same evening, Haldar was discharged from the hospital. The family alleged that they were not given clear post-operative guidance at the time of discharge. Haldar was taken home, and the next day his condition reportedly deteriorated.
On the evening of August 6, Haldar complained of difficulty breathing. Before the family could take any action, he died. The family alleged that discharging him just a few hours after surgery was inappropriate and claimed it led to his death. They also alleged that patients under the Swasthya Sathi scheme are not provided adequate treatment, citing this as a reason for negligence.
Following his death, family members and local residents gathered at the hospital and protested against the administration. They raised slogans and expressed anger over the treatment provided. The hospital has not issued any public response regarding the allegations. The situation remained tense for several hours after the incident.
