Police lodge seven FIRs against BJP leaders for attacking cops during Nabanna Abhiyan

FIRs have been lodged against several BJP leaders, including MLA Ashok Dinda, for their alleged involvement in attacks on police personnel, threats, and contempt of court during the recent Nabanna March. A total of seven FIRs have been registered at the New Market and Hare Street police stations in connection with the incidents.

The high court had previously granted permission for the protest, stipulating that it should remain peaceful. However, the march, which was initially intended to be non-political, was reportedly taken over by BJP leaders. The protestors are accused of assaulting police officers who were tasked with maintaining law and order. According to police reports, three constables were injured in the scuffle, and an officer of IPS rank was also allegedly assaulted. All injured officers received initial medical treatment.

The confrontation between protestors and police occurred on Saturday at Park Street, leading to a major scuffle. Similar tensions were reported in Santragachi. The FIRs cite multiple charges, including assault and intimidation of police officers who attempted to control the crowd. The police have stated that these charges are based on the direct attacks and threats directed at their personnel.

The Nabanna March was initially called for by the parents of a victim in the R.G. Kar case, intended as a non-political demonstration seeking justice. However, the event was co-opted by prominent BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, Ashok Dinda, and Agnimitra Pal. The focus of the protest reportedly shifted from demanding justice to launching personal attacks on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Following the chaos at Park Street, Trinamool Congress (TMC) state general secretary Kunal Ghosh held a press conference, accusing the BJP of politicizing the parents' plea for justice. He stated that the BJP had exploited the parents' cause for their own political agenda, turning a legitimate demand for justice into a platform for political confrontation.

The police have initiated a full investigation into the incidents. The charges filed against the BJP leaders include various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to assault, criminal intimidation, and contempt of court. The authorities are reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify all individuals involved in the violent clashes and to ensure that legal action is taken against them.
