BSF jawan dies by electrocution while fixing border lights in Bengal

A BSF jawan, Swapnail Subhash Sonawane (39), tragically died from electrocution while investigating a problem with the border lights. The incident occurred at the India-Bangladesh border in the Kumarganj block of South Dinajpur district, casting a pall of gloom over the area. Sonawane, who hailed from Dhule, Maharashtra, was a member of the 57th Battalion of the Border Security Force.

Constable Subhash, who also worked as an electrician for the battalion, was called to address a technical issue. Several lights along the border were not working. Late last night, he went to the Dolakuri of Madhabpur Border Outpost (BOP) in Batun Gram Panchayat to pinpoint and fix the problem. This was a routine part of his duty, ensuring that the border remained well-lit for security purposes.

While performing his duties and working on the electrical lines, Sonawane accidentally came into contact with a live wire and was electrocuted. He immediately collapsed at the site. Fellow BSF personnel rushed to his aid as soon as the incident came to light. They quickly transported him to Balurghat District Hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite the swift response, doctors at the hospital were unable to save him. The duty doctor declared him dead upon arrival. The sudden and tragic loss of a dedicated jawan has deeply saddened his colleagues and the local community.

Following the news, senior officers from the 57th Battalion of the BSF arrived at the Balurghat District Hospital on Sunday. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination to officially determine the cause of death. Simultaneously, an investigation has been launched by both the Patiram police station and the BSF to find out exactly how the jawan was electrocuted.
