Rising Ganga waters put Murshidabad on high alert as flood threat looms over villages

After days of relentless rainfall across West Bengal, the intensity of showers eased in the past 24 hours. However, floodwaters from Jharkhand and Bihar have begun flowing into the lower basin of the Ganga, pushing water levels dangerously high in Murshidabad district. Several villages along the Ganga and Padma rivers are now facing a severe flood threat, with the impact expected to extend into parts of Bangladesh.

The Murshidabad district administration has issued alerts in multiple blocks, including Farakka, Suti, Shamsherganj, Raghunathganj, Bhagwangola, and Jalangi. Officials reported that in the last two days, Ganga water has started seeping into villages in Suti, Shamsherganj, and Raghunathganj, creating concerns for widespread inundation.

According to the Farakka Barrage Project Authority, the danger level for the Ganga in the dam area is set at 22.25 meters. With the river approaching this critical mark, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, preparing for potential evacuations and relief measures if the water level continues to rise.
