A video showing staff at Bihar’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bettiah dragging a decomposed dead body up a flight of stairs has gone viral, raising concerns about the treatment of deceased patients. The body, identified as 65-year-old retired employee Kailash Prasad, was recovered from a pit near Nautan Road in Palam City after being missing for four days. It was brought to GMCH for a post-mortem examination.
Police took custody of the unidentified body before transferring it to the hospital. Despite a stretcher being available, eyewitnesses reported that two individuals dragged the body by its legs to the post-mortem room in full public view. Locals expressed distress over the incident, noting that the body was mishandled and that such incidents have occurred previously at the hospital.
The hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Sudha Bharti, stated that the individuals dragging the body are being identified and assured that appropriate action will be taken. The lack of an official statement from the hospital administration until now has drawn criticism from the community and residents, who cited past instances of negligence at GMCH, including videos showing patients being transported improperly.
The incident has triggered a wider discussion on hospital protocols for handling dead bodies and maintaining respect for the deceased. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations, and hospital officials have promised to improve accountability and oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
