No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A sudden and severe erosion along the banks of the Ganga in Samsherganj, Murshidabad, on Monday night left several families homeless. The incident struck while residents were asleep, with portions of their homes collapsing into the river. Although all managed to escape in time, livestock and trees were washed away.
The affected areas — North Chachand and Central Chachand — were jolted awake by what locals described as a loud explosion before seeing chunks of land vanish into the river. Panic spread quickly, and those living closest to the river rushed out to safety in the middle of the night.
Several houses remain at risk, and cracks have appeared in a temple situated near the riverbank. Since Tuesday morning, residents have been gathering their belongings and relocating to safer ground.
Administrative teams reached the spot and are overseeing evacuation efforts, while residents fear further erosion could occur if the situation is not brought under control soon.
