Actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday strongly criticised former Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s recent warning to India over changes to the Indus Waters Treaty. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Chakraborty said provocative statements could invite a strong response from India, warning, “If such statements continue and we lose our patience, BrahMos missiles will be launched one after another.”
In a sarcastic remark, he added that India could build a dam where “140 crore people will pee” and then release it, creating a tsunami. Chakraborty clarified that his comments were directed at Bilawal personally and not against the people of Pakistan.
Bilawal’s comments came after India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in April, following a major terror attack in Pahalgam. At a recent event in Pakistan, Bilawal described any diversion of the Indus River as an attack on the country’s “history, culture, and civilisation”, and warned of war if Pakistan’s water share was denied.
The escalating war of words comes amid heightened tensions between the two countries, with Pakistani military leadership also issuing nuclear threats. India has maintained it will not yield to any form of blackmail and will continue to protect its national interests.
