No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A newly constructed dam in Bhutni South Chandipur of Malda district collapsed early Wednesday, sparking fears of a repeat flood. Built just two months ago at a cost of ₹1.35 crore, the structure gave way to the strong current of the Phulhar river at around 7 am, allowing water to enter the protected area.
The breach caused panic in the Bhuthni South Chandipur region of Manikchak block, where residents recalled last year’s devastating floods that left the area submerged for nearly two months in two phases. The latest collapse has deepened anger among locals, who accuse the authorities of failing to ensure the dam’s durability.
According to locals, water had begun seeping under the dam days earlier. The irrigation department attempted to block the seepage with sand-filled sacks, but the measure failed against the rising water pressure. The fresh breach has renewed concerns over flood preparedness in the district.
