A traffic policeman was assaulted on Hospital Road during the busy morning hours, triggering chaos and halting traffic. Eyewitnesses said the incident began when the officer stopped a bike rider for not wearing a helmet. It is alleged that while stopping him, the policeman raised his hand on the youth.
Within moments, several of the biker’s friends and companions gathered at the spot and attacked the policeman in full public view. The assault caused panic among pedestrians and commuters, with traffic coming to a standstill in the area.
The youths claim the attack was a reaction to the policeman’s alleged misbehaviour and physical aggression. However, police officials have presented a different version of events, denying any misconduct on the part of the traffic officer.
Additional police force soon arrived to disperse the crowd and restore normal traffic movement. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident and are examining CCTV footage from the area.
