BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has delivered a significant blow to both the BJP and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal, as leaders and workers from both parties have defected to the ruling TMC. The defections occurred at the Debendrapur booth under the Panikauri Gram Panchayat in the Rajganj block, where an independent candidate from the previous panchayat elections also joined the party. The move marks a considerable shift in local political dynamics, strengthening the TMC's grassroots presence.
The formal induction ceremony took place on Sunday, where Rajganj MLA Khageshwar Roy welcomed the new members by handing them the TMC party flag. The event was attended by several local leaders, including Rajganj Block TMC President Arindam Banerjee and local women's leader Sarbani Dhara. The presence of these key figures highlights the significance that the TMC places on these defections, as they represent a growing momentum for the party in the area.
According to MLA Khageshwar Roy, the decision of these opposition leaders to join the TMC was a result of their desire to be part of the state's development journey. He stated that people are joining the party, inspired by the "stream of development" under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This narrative is a common one used by the TMC to explain the continuous influx of opposition members into its ranks.
The defection of members from both the BJP, the state's principal opposition, and the CPI(M), which once dominated the political landscape, is a major setback for both parties. The move not only weakens their organizational base at the booth level but also sends a signal of eroding support among their cadres. For the TMC, this is a strategic gain that solidifies its control ahead of future electoral battles.
