The agitation by unemployed teachers outside the SSC building in Kolkata hit a sudden pause on Monday after police arrested three protesters over an alleged conspiracy to incite violence. According to Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, investigators traced an audio conversation where two individuals were purportedly discussing plans of bombing, stone pelting and using socket bombs during the campaign.
Acting on this claim, Magra police arrested Suman Biswas from Adisaptagram, while two more unemployed youth were picked up from Karunamoyee as they arrived to join the march. Police said the arrests were necessary to prevent the agitation from spiralling into chaos, though protest organisers dismissed the allegations and insisted their demands remain firm.
The wave of arrests forced organisers to suspend Monday’s demonstration, but they made it clear the suspension was temporary. “We are not stepping back from our demands. This fight will continue,” the protesters asserted, hinting at a return to the streets once the immediate crackdown eases.
Meanwhile, Karunamoyee Chattar remained under heavy police watch, with plainclothes officers patrolling the square to monitor sudden movements by demonstrators. Authorities said protesters often change routes at the last moment, keeping law enforcement on high alert.
