Hundreds of passengers were left stranded after a Mumbai Monorail train came to a halt between two stations on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred amidst torrential rain, left the passengers trapped for more than two hours on the elevated track, prompting a major rescue operation by emergency services. The unexpected breakdown caused significant disruption and concern.
The technical snag, described by authorities as a "minor power supply issue," occurred at approximately 6:15 pm. The train was running on its elevated track when it suddenly came to a standstill between the Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations. The timing of the incident during heavy rainfall exacerbated the difficult situation for those on board.
Following the reported breakdown, the fire brigade and other rescue officials were immediately dispatched to the scene. Given the train's elevated position, rescue teams began an operation to evacuate the passengers using specialized cranes. The challenging conditions caused by the weather made the rescue process slow and methodical, focusing on the safety of every individual.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis swiftly responded to the situation. He confirmed that he was in constant contact with all concerned officials and had ordered a detailed inquiry into the cause of the incident. He also appealed directly to the stranded passengers, urging them to remain calm and not panic as rescue efforts were in full swing.
The Chief Minister reassured the public that the safe evacuation of all passengers was the top priority for the administration. He added that he was coordinating with the MMRDA Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all other relevant agencies to ensure a seamless rescue operation. He requested everyone to remain patient while the rescue teams worked.
