Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was involved in an incident during a public “Jan Sunvai” event at her Civil Lines residence on Wednesday. A man approached her while she was interacting with citizens, handed over a piece of paper, and reportedly used abusive language. Security personnel immediately intervened and detained the individual.
The accused, identified as Rajesh, 41, from Rajkot in Gujarat, was taken into custody. Police are verifying his statement and investigating his motives, including potential political leanings. There is still no clarity on the exact sequence of events, as accounts from witnesses varied.
Initial reports suggested that the CM was slapped and her hair pulled. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva later refuted these claims, saying that the CM may have hit her head on the edge of a table during a brief commotion when the man attempted to hold her hand. Doctors examined Gupta and confirmed that she is stable.
Witnesses described the incident differently. Some said the man “suddenly slapped her” while presenting his complaint, while BJP officials initially described hair pulling. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor stated, “From the things he was saying, it seems this person had criminal intent and political leanings. He has been detained by police. We are awaiting further inquiry.”
Despite the incident, the Jan Sunvai continued as scheduled. Sachdeva added, “The CM is resting right now but has said that she will not cancel her programmes. This has caused some shock. I have met her, she is a strong woman.” Police continue to investigate the incident, and further details regarding the attacker’s motives are expected once the inquiry is complete.
