Weather Update: Heavy rains to lash Kolkata, several districts for 7 days; Low pressure to form on Bay of Bengal

The Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for West Bengal starting Thursday. South Bengal districts, including North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, and Purulia, are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Winds may reach speeds of up to 50 km/h during the period.

The department has warned that the intensity of rainfall will increase on Friday and Saturday, with coastal and western districts expected to receive particularly heavy showers. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on Friday and Saturday due to rough conditions. North Bengal districts such as Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Kalimpong are also expected to witness heavy rainfall from Thursday.

Malda, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur are forecast to receive heavy rainfall over the weekend. Continuous rainfall may raise water levels in major rivers including the Teesta, Torsa, and Jaldhaka. Residents in low-lying areas and flood-prone zones are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

In Kolkata, Thursday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 26°C, while the maximum is expected to reach 29°C. The average daytime temperature is likely to stay around 27°C. Winds are blowing at an average speed of 5.13 km/h with gusts reaching 8.29 km/h, coming from 223 degrees.
