Kolkata makes Bengali signboards mandatory for all shops, Mayor warns of licence cancellation

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has made it mandatory for all shops and business establishments in the city to display signboards in Bengali. The decision was announced by Mayor Firhad Hakim during the corporation’s monthly session.

Hakim clarified that while signboards in other languages may be used, Bengali must be included without exception. Shops and institutions failing to comply will face strict action, including the cancellation of their licence renewals.

“This is our language, and every signboard in the city must carry Bengali,” the mayor said while stressing the order. The directive is aimed at strengthening the cultural identity of Kolkata and ensuring greater visibility of the state’s official language in public spaces.

The corporation has instructed all establishments to make the required changes at the earliest, warning that violations will not be tolerated once the rule comes into effect.
