Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
A first-year college student, Ishita Mallick, was shot dead inside her house at Manikpara in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred in front of her mother and brother, leading to panic and shock in the locality.
According to police, the accused, identified as Debraj Singh, allegedly entered the second floor of the house around noon and fired multiple shots at close range. Ishita collapsed immediately and died on the spot. Her mother later told police that she heard a loud noise from the room and, upon rushing inside, found her daughter lying in a pool of blood. She also said she saw a man fleeing the scene with a firearm.
Senior officers of Krishnanagar Police District reached the location shortly after the incident. District Superintendent K. Amarnath confirmed that Ishita’s body bore two injury marks. “The body has been sent for post-mortem. We have identified the accused and a search is on to apprehend him,” he said. Police teams have begun scanning CCTV footage from the area and have started an extensive search operation.
Police sources said Ishita was pursuing her first year of college and had known Debraj for some time. The two were in a relationship, according to preliminary investigation. Authorities said they are gathering further details about their background and are questioning locals for additional information.
The incident has caused widespread fear among residents of Manikpara. Police patrols have been stepped up in the area, and search operations are continuing to trace the accused, who has been absconding since the shooting.
