In Basirhat Municipality, a case of irregularities in the voter list has come to light after 32 deceased persons were found registered as voters in booth number 251 of ward number 3. The booth has a total of 1,084 voters, but the inclusion of these names has raised concerns about the accuracy of the electoral rolls.
According to records, some of the deceased individuals passed away two years ago, some six years ago, and some as recently as last year. The names listed include Tapan Adhikari, Swapan Adhikari, Chandan Kumar Kundu, and Gayatri Kundu. Family members of the deceased had already obtained official death certificates, but their names continue to remain on the rolls.
Basirhat Municipality Vice-Chairman Subir Sarkar acknowledged the issue, stating, “This problem is not limited to one booth. Many booths across the municipality have such fake voters. We had earlier informed the Election Commission, but no action was taken. A detailed report will be sent again to higher authorities.”
Local residents have demanded that the voter list be immediately reviewed and corrected to remove the names of deceased individuals. They stressed that the verification of electoral rolls is essential for maintaining accuracy and called on the administration to take prompt action.
