Rajnath Singh: Drones critical to modern warfare, must be integrated into India’s defence policy

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday underlined the critical role of drones in modern warfare, emphasizing the need to incorporate them into India’s defence policy. He made the remarks while inaugurating Raphe mPhibr Pvt Ltd's defence equipment and engine-testing facility in Noida, highlighting that drones are increasingly deployed in areas where larger military equipment cannot operate.

Singh cited the Russia-Ukraine conflict as an example, stating, “If you closely observe the Russia-Ukraine conflict, you will notice that drones have been used extensively – earlier, now, and continuously.” He stressed that drones have evolved into a significant force, altering the dynamics of combat and surveillance operations.

Tracing the history of drone use, Singh explained that drones were initially employed only for surveillance and reconnaissance. Over time, several countries developed drones designed for combat purposes, deploying them in border conflicts and other military operations to gain strategic advantages.

The Defence Minister noted that nations investing in drone technology have gained a significant edge, while others lag behind. “From my six to six-and-a-half years of experience as Defence Minister, I can say that the reality of today’s defence sector rests on aircraft technology and drones,” he said, emphasizing their growing importance in national security.

Singh highlighted India’s progress in domestic drone development, stating, “Earlier, we had to import drones, but today we are designing, developing, and manufacturing them domestically.” He praised entrepreneurs contributing to the country’s drone technology, calling their efforts a “strong reflection of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
