Xi Jinping tells Modi: 'Dragon and Elephant must come together' as leaders meet at SCO summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Sunday in Tianjin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This was Modi’s first visit to China in seven years, taking place against the backdrop of efforts by both sides to reset bilateral ties.

In his opening remarks, President Xi said, “The world is going towards transformation. China and India are two of the most civilizational countries. We are the world’s two most populous countries and part of the Global South... It is vital to be friends, a good neighbour, and the Dragon and the Elephant to come together.” He also noted that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, urging both sides to view their relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective.

Xi added, “We must also step up to our historic responsibilities to uphold multilateralism, a multipolar world, and more democracy in international institutions and work together for peace and prosperity in Asia and around the world.”

Prime Minister Modi, in his remarks, said, “We are determined to take our relationship forward based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity. We extend our best wishes for the successful hosting of the SCO Summit, and I thank you for the invitation for this visit and this meeting.” Modi stressed that the welfare of 2.8 billion people is linked to India-China cooperation. He also highlighted that peace and stability have returned along the border following last year’s disengagement process.

The Prime Minister announced the resumption of direct flights between India and China and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. He also recalled their previous meeting in Kazan, Russia, during the BRICS Summit in 2024. This was the second meeting between Modi and Xi in the last ten months, following progress in negotiations last year to address the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control that began in 2020.
