West Bengal Police arrested Deshraj Singh, the prime accused in the murder of student Ishita Mallick in Nadia district, early Monday morning in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest occurred in Nautanwa town, Maharajganj district, near the Nepal border, as Deshraj allegedly attempted to flee in a vehicle.
The crime took place on August 25, when Deshraj, a resident of Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas originally from Uttar Pradesh, reportedly entered his girlfriend’s home in Palpara, Krishnanagar, and fatally shot her after she tried to end their relationship.Following the killing, Deshraj evaded capture for a week, allegedly aided by his family, two gangster brothers-in-law, and influential contacts in Uttar Pradesh.
Three specialized teams from Krishnanagar Police were deployed to Uttar Pradesh, suspecting he was hiding in secret locations. The breakthrough came after the arrest of his maternal uncle, Kuldeep Singh, in Jamnagar, Gujarat, on Sunday, which provided crucial leads. Deshraj was subsequently brought to Krishnanagar Kotwali police station on transit remand. Meanwhile, his father, Raghavendra Pratap Singh, is under house arrest in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and will soon be brought to Krishnanagar for questioning.
