Rats bite 2 newborns' fingers, head, shoulder inside Indore’s biggest government hospital

A shocking case of negligence has surfaced from Indore’s Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH), one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest government hospitals, where two newborns were bitten by rats inside the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The incidents, reported on Sunday and Monday, left one baby with injured fingers and another with bite marks on the head and shoulder. Hospital staff detected the injuries and later CCTV footage confirmed the presence of rats moving near the infants.

Hospital superintendent Dr Ashok Yadav admitted that pest control had not been carried out for five years. He assured that both infants are stable and under continuous care, while an extensive pest control drive has now been ordered. “Iron nets are being installed and relatives have been asked not to carry food inside wards to avoid attracting rodents,” he said.

The opposition Congress strongly criticised the state government, alleging a complete collapse of public healthcare. “Even newborns are not safe in MP’s biggest hospital. This shows the level of neglect under this government,” said Congress spokesperson Dr Amit Chaurasia.
