Haldia gate demolishes, NH 116 shuts for new gateway project

The iconic Haldia Gate, a landmark at the entrance to West Bengal’s industrial hub, was dismantled on Wednesday, marking the start of an ambitious project to replace it with a modern, structurally sound gateway. The Haldia Development Authority (HDA) spearheaded the operation, which required closing National Highway 116 (NH 116) from 8 PM Wednesday to 6 AM Thursday to facilitate the safe removal of the old structure. Preparations for the demolition began earlier in the afternoon, with skilled engineers, heavy-duty cranes, and a dedicated workforce ensuring the task was completed efficiently.

The closure rerouted traffic through Mahishadal and Chaitanyapur, causing temporary inconvenience but ensuring safety. This move signals HDA’s commitment to upgrading Haldia’s infrastructure to match its growing stature as a key industrial and trade hub in eastern India. The demolition process was meticulously planned, with HDA issuing a public notice to inform residents and commuters about the NH 116 closure. The operation began at 4 PM on Wednesday, with cranes and skilled workers carefully dismantling the old gate, which had stood since 2013. Over the years, the gate’s infrastructure had weakened, prompting the HDA to prioritize its replacement to ensure safety and aesthetic appeal.

The presence of HDA officials, district police, and fire brigade personnel at the site underscored the operation’s significance and the need for seamless coordination. By today morning, the old gate was completely removed, and NH 116 was reopened, restoring normal traffic flow. The old Haldia Gate, constructed in 2013, had become a symbol of the port city but was no longer fit for purpose due to structural wear. The HDA recognized the need for a new, modern design that reflects Haldia’s industrial prominence and future aspirations. To this end, the authority has already floated tenders for the construction of a new gate at Brajalalchak, near the entrance to Haldia on NH 116. The new design promises to be both visually striking and durable, aligning with the city’s ongoing transformation into a major industrial destination.

This project is part of HDA’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure, including roads, water supply, and industrial facilities. The temporary closure of NH 116, which connects Kolaghat to Haldia Port, affected the stretch between Brajalalchak and Kapaserya. To minimize disruption, HDA rerouted vehicles through Mahishadal and Chaitanyapur, ensuring that essential travel and trade activities continued with minimal delays. NH 116, previously known as NH 41, is a critical artery for Haldia, linking the port city to National Highway 16 and facilitating trade across eastern India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The smooth execution of the gate removal highlights HDA’s ability to manage large-scale projects while maintaining public safety and convenience. The new Haldia Gate is expected to become a modern landmark, symbolizing the city’s growth as a petrochemical and trade hub. The HDA’s proactive approach, including the use of advanced engineering and high-quality materials, aims to ensure the new structure’s longevity. The project has already generated excitement among residents, who see it as a step toward modernizing Haldia while preserving its identity as the “Gateway to Eastern India.”

The tender process indicates that construction will begin soon, with the HDA committed to completing the project efficiently to avoid further disruptions. This development comes as Haldia continues to attract significant industrial investment, with companies like Haldia Petrochemicals and Indian Oil Corporation driving economic growth. The new gate will not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also signal its readiness to welcome more businesses and visitors. With the old gate now removed and traffic normalized, Haldia looks forward to unveiling a new symbol of progress that reflects its dynamic role in India’s industrial landscape.
