Mithun Chakraborty files 100 crore defamtion suit against Kunal Ghosh, faces counter-case

Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has taken legal action against Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, filing a civil defamation suit for ₹100 crore at the Calcutta High Court. The suit alleges that Ghosh made a series of false and malicious comments during a press conference in July, which have severely damaged the reputation of Chakraborty and his family. The legal move comes after Chakraborty was reportedly unsatisfied with Ghosh’s response to a prior legal notice.

The defamation suit outlines several specific allegations made by Kunal Ghosh. It states that Ghosh accused Chakraborty of being involved in multiple financial scandals, including the Alchemist Group money laundering scam, the Rose Valley Financial Scandal, and the Saradha Chit Fund Scandal. These allegations, according to Chakraborty's legal team, are completely baseless and have been made out of political malice.

Adding to the gravity of the matter, the suit also mentions that Ghosh made unsubstantiated claims against Chakraborty's son, alleging his involvement in a rape case. The suit further claims that Ghosh accused Chakraborty's wife of being involved in a financial scandal, stating she had entered into business transactions with individuals who perpetrated such frauds. These remarks, Chakraborty argues, are intended to tarnish his and his family's personal honor and social standing.

The former Rajya Sabha MP, who is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award, claims that Ghosh's comments have not only affected his personal life but have also had a professional impact on his career in films and advertising. By filing the suit, Chakraborty seeks to hold Ghosh accountable for the damage caused by his defamatory statements.

In a counter-move, Kunal Ghosh has stated that he is also filing a criminal defamation suit against Mithun Chakraborty. Ghosh expressed his readiness to face the legal proceedings and even said that he would pray for a CBI investigation into the allegations he made against the actor. He remarked that he was waiting for such a situation to take the chit fund documents to court.

Ghosh has also questioned Chakraborty's credibility, referencing his history of changing political affiliations. He pointed out that Chakraborty was a Naxalite in his youth, later joined the Shiv Sena, became a TMC MP, and is now with the BJP. This ongoing legal and political dispute highlights the deep-seated rivalry between the two prominent political figures in West Bengal.
