A Gorakhpur resident was arrested at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport after being caught with a tampered passport while attempting to fly to Bangkok. The man, identified as Gulab Ojha, had allegedly altered the document after its expiry by changing the name and extending its validity.
Officials said that Ojha reached the international terminal on Tuesday for immigration clearance when officers noticed discrepancies in his passport. Upon questioning, he admitted that the passport had already expired and that he had manipulated it to use for travel.
Following his confession, Ojha was detained and handed over to the police at NSCBI police station. Investigators are now examining how he managed to alter the passport and whether others were involved in the forgery.
Authorities said the case highlights ongoing challenges in preventing passport fraud and stressed that strict checks at airports remain crucial for national security.
