No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
The cascading effect of the violent Gen-Z protests in Nepal has now reached the India-Nepal border, with the Nepal Railway announcing the indefinite suspension of the Jaynagar-Janakpurdham rail service. The decision was made due to escalating violence and growing safety concerns, leaving thousands of commuters stranded at the border with no alternative means of transport. The suspension marks a significant disruption in the cross-border connectivity that is a lifeline for many residents in the region.
While the train service was operating normally on Tuesday morning, the situation deteriorated in the afternoon. Amid deteriorating conditions and rising security threats, Nepal Railway issued an immediate order to halt all train operations. The two train racks at Jaynagar station were subsequently held back for security purposes to prevent any potential damage, as a precautionary measure.
The sudden decision has had a massive impact on passengers from Nepal's border districts like Janakpurdham and Siraha. Many of them were left stranded at the Jaynagar station, facing immense difficulties and a lack of clear information. With no alternative travel options, a large number of passengers have been forced to wait at the station under the open sky, with some even taking shelter on the foot-over bridge.
Travel by road has also become nearly impossible due to the indefinite curfew imposed in Janakpurdham and Siraha districts. Bus services and private vehicles have been shut down, leaving passengers with no way to travel between the two countries. This has compounded the problems for those stranded at the station, who are now left with no immediate way to reach their destinations.
In response to the escalating tensions, security at the border has been significantly increased. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel have been deployed in greater numbers at both the Jaynagar and Nepal railway stations. The stations have been evacuated, and all but one gate has been sealed to prevent any untoward incidents.
The atmosphere at the border is now one of eerie silence and tension. The suspension of the rail service and the stringent security measures reflect the gravity of the situation in Nepal, where widespread protests against a social media ban and government corruption continue to cause unrest. The indefinite suspension will continue until the security situation improves, leaving the fate of the rail service and its passengers in limbo.
