Kolkata's Haridevpur police have successfully arrested one of the two key suspects in a recent gang-rape case. The accused, identified as Chandan Malik, was taken into custody at Burdwan station as he was reportedly attempting to flee to another state by train. This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the horrific incident.

The case involves a young woman who was allegedly gang-raped during a birthday celebration at a flat in the Regent Park area of Kolkata. The victim, a resident of the Haridevpur police station area, knew Chandan, who had introduced himself as a prominent member of a major Durga Puja committee in South Kolkata. It was through him that she met the second main accused, named Deep.

According to the victim's statement to the police, the two men had promised her a role in the puja committee's work. On the day of the incident, the two accused invited her to a birthday party at a flat on the 5th of this month. It was at this location that the assault allegedly took place.

Following the traumatic ordeal, the victim managed to return home and immediately reported the incident to the police. Haridevpur police swiftly registered a case and launched a search for the two absconding suspects, Chandan and Deep.
