Attack on Pak will be an attack on Saudi! What did India say on the new pact

In a significant geopolitical development, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have signed a "Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement," a pact that contains a key clause stating that "any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both." This agreement was signed in Riyadh during Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's state visit, marking a formalization of the two countries' long-standing, but previously informal, defense partnership. The move has drawn a measured response from India, which has stated it will carefully study the implications of the pact for its national security and regional stability.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson said that while India was aware that the pact had been under consideration, it would now be analyzing the potential consequences. The MEA's statement emphasized the government's commitment to "protecting India's national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains." The timing of this agreement is particularly sensitive, coming just months after a brief but intense military confrontation between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and India's counterstrike, "Operation Sindoor."

A joint statement from Riyadh and Islamabad highlighted that the pact is built on a "historic partnership extending for nearly eight decades" and is based on "bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity." The agreement is aimed at enhancing defense cooperation and strengthening "joint deterrence against any aggression." A photograph from the meeting showed Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, alongside Prime Minister Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, underscoring the military dimension of the agreement.

The pact's signing occurs at a time when relations between New Delhi and Riyadh have been steadily growing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India is now the second-largest trading partner for Saudi Arabia, with a burgeoning economic and strategic partnership. This was highlighted during PM Modi's state visit to Riyadh earlier this year, where Saudi Arabia strongly condemned cross-border terrorism, agreeing that "there cannot be any justification for any act of terror for any reason whatsoever."

Despite this growing bilateral engagement, the new Saudi-Pakistan pact introduces a new variable into the regional power balance. While Saudi officials have reportedly clarified that the agreement is not a reaction to any specific country or event, its strategic implications for India are undeniable. Defense analysts and diplomats will be closely watching how this new alliance might alter the strategic environment of South Asia and the Gulf region.
