Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday that 840 prisoners serving life sentences have been released from West Bengal’s jails since 2011. These inmates were granted release after completing more than 14 years of imprisonment and demonstrating good behavior during their sentence.
Banerjee shared the information on social media, emphasizing that the aim of the prison reform program is to transform the mindset of criminals and reintegrate them into society. She also mentioned that the release process for 45 more prisoners is currently underway.
According to the law, life convicts who complete 14 years in prison can apply for release. Their behavior, mental state, and rehabilitation potential are reviewed by the court and state government before approval. The Chief Minister expressed hope that those released will begin a new chapter as responsible citizens.
Recently, Subrata Sarkar, a Kolkata resident serving a life term, was released under this program. With state assistance, he secured a loan to buy an auto-rickshaw and has now started working on the Rashbehari–Behala route, an example of rehabilitation beyond prison walls.
