PM will offer Anjali to Maa Durga this Ashtami in Kolkata, receives multiple invitations
Kolkata is reeling from a tragic series of events as heavy rainfall and subsequent waterlogging have claimed eight lives in separate incidents across the city as per the latest update. The deaths, which occurred overnight in various neighborhoods including Beniapukur, Kalikapur, Netaji Nagar, Gariahat, Ekbalpur, Garfa, Behala and Haridevpur underscore the severe impact of the ongoing deluge. As the city grapples with submerged streets and disrupted services, the fatalities have added a grim dimension to the crisis, highlighting the dangers posed by urban flooding.
The relentless downpour has paralyzed the city's transport network. Both the Howrah and Sealdah yards are completely submerged, causing significant disruption to train and metro services. This has left thousands of daily commuters stranded, with many unable to reach their destinations. The sight of railway tracks disappearing under a sheet of water is a clear indication of the severity of the situation.
Roads across North, Central, and South Kolkata are completely waterlogged, turning the city into a watery maze. Residents in areas like Gariahat and Kalikapur are particularly affected, with water levels reaching dangerous heights. Even the usually well-drained Salt Lake area is struggling, with many of its roads and by-lanes inundated, causing severe inconvenience to residents and businesses.
The waterlogging has resulted in extensive damage to homes and shops in low-lying areas, particularly in Lake Town. Many small businesses have been forced to close down as their premises are filled with water, leading to significant financial losses. The water has seeped into residential buildings, damaging furniture and other household items, adding to the misery of the residents.
Adding to the city's woes, the weather department has issued a forecast of more heavy rainfall for today. This has created a sense of anxiety and helplessness among the residents, who fear that the situation may worsen before it gets better. The ongoing low-pressure system is expected to continue to bring intense showers, making it difficult for the city to recover.
Local authorities, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, have been working round the clock to clear the drains and pump out the water, but their efforts are being hampered by the continuous rain. The tragic loss of life has further highlighted the need for a more robust and resilient urban infrastructure to combat the challenges of climate change and extreme weather events.
