More trouble for Mamata, sedition complaint filed over "controversial comment" against India
Often in Kolkata Metro's Blue Line one finds the display boards blank and announcements muffled beyond comprehension—this was the frustrating reality for commuters for the last month when the entire Blue line’s Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) went dark, leaving daily travelers stranded without train schedules. The chaos, which sparked widespread irritation among passengers, persisted for days before a temporary fix restored the screens, though glitches continued to plague stations in Blue line. In response, Metro authorities decided a massive Rs 16.14 crores expense and already tender has also been finalised, replacing every display board—both on platforms and at station entrances—and modernizing the outdated passenger announcement system to ensure crystal-clear communication, addressing long-standing complaints about garbled audio that left riders guessing about delays or destinations.
The decision comes after weeks of commuter backlash, with many alleging that the Kolkata Metro deliberately disabled displays to mask operational inefficiencies, though officials insist the systems simply failed due to age and wear. The Blue Line, Kolkata’s oldest and busiest metro corridor, has been stretched thin, especially since integrating with newer lines at hubs like Esplanade & Noapara where frequent announcements are critical for guiding crowds. Metro’s tender for the upgrade is already underway, promising sleek, reliable displays and a revamped audio setup to match the demands of a network now serving millions across interconnected routes. This overhaul isn’t just about fixing screens—it’s about restoring trust in a system that’s the lifeline for Kolkata’s workforce, students, and families and everyone.
The upgrades aim to eliminate the patchwork repairs that barely kept the displays running post-breakdown, ensuring real-time train updates and audible alerts, especially during disruptions. Metro officials emphasize that passenger comfort is the priority, with the new systems designed to handle the complexities of a growing network. As the city gears up for this transformation, commuters are hopeful but cautious, eager for a smoother ride but wary of delays in execution, given the Metro’s history of hiccups. With the festive season behind and work in progress, Kolkata’s Blue Line is poised for a tech-driven comeback, promising to ease the daily grind for its loyal riders.
