Massive traffic congestion was reported on Vidyasagar Setu on Saturday morning after the bridge failed to reopen on time following scheduled maintenance work. Motorists and office-goers faced severe inconvenience as long queues of vehicles stretched across both Kolkata and Howrah sides.
The administration had earlier announced that traffic would remain suspended till 9 a.m. for maintenance and repair of cable lines. However, even after the stipulated time, the bridge remained closed, triggering a traffic jam across key connecting roads from Central Kolkata to Howrah.
Kolkata Police and traffic personnel were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation and guide commuters towards alternative routes. Many office-goers struggled to reach their destinations on time, while several vehicles were left stranded for hours near the bridge entry points.
Authorities assured that the delay was due to final safety checks and added that efforts were underway to reopen the bridge at the earliest. Traffic restrictions are also planned for Sunday, October 12, between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., as part of the ongoing maintenance schedule.
