Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies wins big at the 70th edition of the Filmfare Awards, securing a staggering 13 trophies. The star-studded event, hosted by Bollywood heavyweights Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar alongside actor Maniesh Paul, took place on Saturday at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad.
The film, which shows the story of two swapped brides, was rightfully honored with the Best Film award. Kiran Rao herself clinched the coveted Best Director award. The acting ensemble of Laapataa Ladies also received widespread recognition. Nitanshi Goel, who played one of the central roles, was awarded the Best Debut Actor Female award, signifying a promising start to her career. Her co-star, Pratibha Ranta, secured the Critics' Award for Best Actor Female, highlighting the nuanced performances of the lead cast. Adding to the tally, seasoned actors Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan both won awards in the Best Supporting Actors categories, showcasing the strength of the entire cast.
Beyond the major categories, Laapataa Ladies dominated the technical and musical fields. Sneha Desai was a double winner, taking home awards for both Best Screenplay and Best Dialogue, which were integral to the film's success. The music department also shone brightly, with Ram Sampath winning both Best Music Album and Best Background Score.
The film's impact on music extended further as Prashant Pandey won the award for Best Lyrics, and renowned singer Arijit Singh was recognized in the Best Playback Singer Male category for his soulful contribution to the soundtrack. The meticulous work of Darshan Jalan in costuming was also recognized, securing the award for Best Costume.
