Indian Railways swiftly moved to clarify the chaotic scene at West Bengal's Bardhaman railway station, asserting that an incident resulting in eight passenger injuries on Sunday evening was not a stampede. The official clarification came after reports of a massive rush and a "stampede-like situation" circulated.
The unfortunate incident took place around 5:30 PM between platforms 4 and 5 of the busy station. Howrah Divisional Railway Manager, Vishal Kapoor, detailed the sequence of events, explaining that the situation was triggered when a woman lost her balance while descending the stairs of the foot overbridge (FOB).
As the woman fell, several other passengers who were either standing or sitting on the foot overbridge stairs also lost their balance and tumbled down, leading to multiple injuries. This chain reaction, while causing chaos and multiple passengers falling, was distinct from a full-blown stampede, which typically involves a sudden, crushing surge of people. Among the eight injured passengers rushed to the Bardhaman Medical College for immediate treatment were five women and three men.
