In a major breakthrough, police have arrested the last accused in the alleged gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur. The accused, identified as Safikul Sheikh, was arrested from Gopalmath in the Vijda area on Monday afternoon. Police said he had been absconding since the incident and was hiding in the area.
Earlier, on Sunday night, police had arrested another accused, Nasiruddin Sheikh, a temporary employee of the Durgapur Municipal Corporation. Acting on a tip-off, officers launched an overnight operation, leading to the capture of both accused within 48 hours. Both were produced in the Durgapur Magistrate Court on Monday and remanded to police custody for further questioning.
Police sources confirmed that all the accused in the case are now in custody, and the investigation is progressing under strict confidentiality. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her stance on justice for the victim, stating that “the culprits will not be spared under any circumstances.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through Durgapur, with local residents and student organizations demanding strict punishment for the offenders. With all accused arrested, the administration has assured that the legal process will be fast-tracked to ensure justice is delivered swiftly.
