An adult leopard died after being struck by a speeding car on Tuesday night near the Torsa Bridge area adjacent to Madarihat in Alipurduar. The incident occurred as the leopard was crossing the road. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving the injured animal on the roadside.
Forest department officials rushed to the spot after receiving information and began treatment for the injured leopard. Despite their efforts, the animal could not be saved and was declared dead at around 2:30 am, according to Jaldapara Forest Officer Nabi Kant Jha.
The accident has raised concerns over wildlife safety in areas frequented by animals. The forest department noted that warning boards have been placed in such zones, urging drivers to reduce speed, but incidents continue due to reckless driving.
An investigation has been launched into the accident to identify the vehicle and driver responsible. Forest officials stressed the importance of vigilance on roads near wildlife habitats to prevent similar tragedies.
