A massive fire broke out at the Kali Puja pavilion in Sukantanagar near Chingrighata on Friday evening, triggering panic among residents. The blaze erupted shortly after the idol immersion ritual was completed. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, but authorities suspect negligence while lighting firecrackers.
Police from Bidhannagar South Police Station rushed to the spot, though local residents had already begun dousing the flames. Members of the Sukantanagar Cultural Club also joined efforts to bring the situation under control before the fire tenders arrived. Two fire engines from the department reached soon after and managed to extinguish the fire completely.
The incident created tension in the area, located close to the EM Bypass. Police have launched an investigation and are questioning local residents to determine how the fire began. No casualties have been reported so far, though parts of the pavilion were completely destroyed.
