Fire breaks out at State Bank of India's Dhakuria branch

A massive fire broke out this morning at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in the Dhakuria area of South Kolkata, sending plumes of smoke billowing across the heavily congested locality. The branch is located on 14 Gariahat South Road.

Upon receiving the report, the Fire and Emergency Services Department dispatched multiple units. Initially, two fire tenders rushed to the scene, but realizing the severity and scale of the blaze, four more were called in, bringing the total to six. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, preliminary speculation points towards a short circuit, a common cause of such incidents in old, commercial buildings across the city.

Fortunately, since the fire broke out in the morning hours when the bank was closed, no casualties or injuries were reported among the staff or customers. However, the extent of the damage within the bank premises is believed to be substantial. Valuable official documents, records, computer systems, and interior infrastructure have likely been severely damaged or destroyed by the flames and the water used for extinguishing them.
