Tension prevailed in New Town on Tuesday morning after the body of an unidentified man was found on the banks of the Bagjola Canal, near Yatragachhi Higher Secondary School. The discovery sent shock waves across the area, with locals expressing fear and uncertainty over the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, some residents who were out for their morning walk spotted the body lying on the canal bank and immediately alerted the New Town police station. A team from Bidhannagar police soon reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to the Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police said the man’s identity remains unknown and a probe has been initiated to determine both his identity and the cause of death. Officers are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning local residents as part of the investigation.
Locals claim this is the first such incident in the area, adding to public anxiety. Investigators have not ruled out any possibility — be it natural death, accident, or criminal activity — and said the exact cause will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
