"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
A horrifying incident of mob violence has surfaced from the Bankra area of Howrah district, where a young man suspected of theft was tied to a pole and brutally beaten. The incident occurred late on Monday night in the Jamadar Pada area, exposing yet another case of people taking the law into their own hands.
According to local sources, several residents caught an unidentified youth on suspicion of theft. They tied him to a roadside pole and assaulted him with sticks. The mob went further—cutting his hair, forcing him to smoke a cigarette, and then beating him again for doing so. The act, captured by onlookers, triggered outrage in the locality.
Police from the Bankra Phaddi outpost arrived promptly after being informed and rescued the victim, who was later hospitalized with injuries. Officers said the man was not a local resident and that no proof of theft had been found so far. Multiple suspects have been identified, and a search is underway to arrest the culprits.
Officials emphasized that no one has the right to enforce punishment outside the law, and those involved will face strict legal action. The shocking incident has sparked anger and fear across the community, with locals condemning the brutality as “inhuman and unconstitutional.”
