Chaos erupted in the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday during the hearing of a School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment case. Justice Amrita Sinha, visibly annoyed by the commotion and applause inside the courtroom, ordered all clients to leave immediately, warning that such disruptions would not be tolerated again.
During the session, a heated exchange took place between the lawyers of both sides. However, proceedings were interrupted when a group of spectators began clapping in support of a lawyer’s argument. The judge expressed sharp displeasure and asked all clients associated with the case to step out, stating that recruitment-related cases have become increasingly crowded and disruptive.
Senior lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya presented a WhatsApp message in court, allegedly showing that clients had planned to be present in large numbers to “create pressure” on the proceedings. Responding to this, Justice Sinha remarked that such attempts to influence the court were unacceptable. She further directed that, going forward, clients and visitors would not be allowed inside the courtroom during these hearings.
Justice Sinha reminded attendees that all proceedings in her court are streamed live and can be viewed without entering the courtroom. The bench has not yet commented on the issue of awarding 10 marks in the SSC case, noting that the matter is already pending before the Supreme Court.
