Bengal's ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), is stepping up its fight against the Election Commission's handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, with National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee forming a special team of 10 MPs to take the protest straight to Delhi. In a virtual meeting, the Abhishek laid out a clear plan to highlight the "unplanned" SIR's flaws, which he says have caused major problems for people, including hardships and even deaths blamed on the rushed process.
The 10 member team includes senior MPs like Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Derek O'Brien, Shatabdi Roy, Dola Sen, Mahua Moitra, Prakash Chik Baraik, Sajda Ahmed, Mamatabala Thakur, Saket Gokhale. Abhishek further said that since Sudeep Banerjee is ill, he could manage he will go to Delhi otherwise this responsibility is being given to the rest MPs. The team has been tasked with meeting the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to demand fixes and question why no action like an FIR has been taken against those responsible. Abhishek stressed that the two-month hasty rollout of SIR has led to errors, societal harm, and unnecessary burdens on citizens. He instructed the MPs to present a detailed list of issues without holding back, ensuring the commission understands the ground realities. Abhishek demands FIR on CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
This move comes amid growing tensions in West Bengal over the ongoing SIR process, where TMC accuses the process of being poorly planned and damaging to voters' rights. In a separate virtual huddle with party workers involved in SIR tasks, Abhishek reviewed progress and issued strict deadlines for completion. He divided responsibilities among state ministers and MLAs across zones to ensure smooth execution on TMC's end. While pushing for internal efficiency, the party is firm on protesting the central flaws, aiming to protect people from what they call an oppressive and faulty system.
