West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy was astonishingly stopped today while she was returning after power-packed SIR protest in Matua Belt. Reportedly, angry relatives of a road-accident victim blocked the road in front of Barasat Medical College & Hospital. Yesterday, a 35-years-old man from Barasat's Netajinagar area had died in a road accident and his body was kept at the hospital morgue for post-mortem. Today, when the family came to collect the body in the evening after the autopsy, they were horrified to discover that both eyes of the deceased had been ripped off. Enraged family members and locals immediately sat on a dharna outside Barasat hospital premises which later spilled onto the main road leading to a road block situation, bringing the bustling traffic to a standstill.
As the protest intensifies, CM Mamata Banerjee’s convoy was passing through the spot. CM ordered her convoy to halt and spoke directly to the family for nearly 15 minutes. She assures them that CCTV footage would be examined and a thorough investigation would be conducted to find out how and why the eyes have been removed.
To provide immediate relief, Mamata announces a government job to the deceased youth’s mother. Until the permanent appointment is processed, she will receive ₹10,000 per month as salary. Only after the Chief Minister’s personal assurance, the family called off the protest and lift the road blockade, allowing her convoy to proceed towards Kolkata. The incident has once again raised questions about the safety and monitoring of dead bodies in state-run hospital morgues.
