An incident turned deadly in South 24 Parganas district when a government vehicle bearing “Government of West Bengal” logo killed 45-year-old Ashok oandal near Narayanpur Vidyamandir area under Kakdwip police station. The car belonged to the South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad and was reportedly on official duty when the accident happened around midnight.
Locals heard a loud thud, rushed out, and found Ashok lying in a pool of blood on the dark stretch of road. Despite being rushed to the nearest hospital, doctors declared him brought dead, sending shockwaves in the area. Ashok, a resident of Namkhana police station area, was returning home when the speeding car hit him from behind. Police from Kakdwip station rushed the spot quickly, seized the car, and took the driver into custody for questioning.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on road safety in the region, where poorly lit roads and high-speed official vehicles often spell danger for pedestrians. Locals allege many government cars travel late at night without proper lights or speed control. Bengal Police have promised a thorough probe and assured the family of all possible help while the area remains tense.
