A peaceful morning turned tragic in Howrah’s Salap Bazar area when a speeding car hit and killed an elderly man aged over 60. The man died on the spot, and within minutes the entire area boiled over with anger. Local residents surrounded the Howrah police vehicle that was taking the driver into custody, blocked Howrah Road completely, and shouted slogans for hours. Traffic came to a standstill as people refused to move until the authorities promised real action against repeated accidents on this dangerous stretch.
Police from Nibra Traffic Guard and Domjur Thana reached quickly, but the crowd was too upset to listen at first. Extra police forces and RAF teams had to be called in to control the situation. After long talks, police officers finally calmed the protesters and cleared the road. The driver is now in custody, and the elderly man’s body has been sent for post-mortem while the police investigate the case.
Local residents allege that despite frequent road accidents in the area, the administration is not taking any concrete steps. They blame the lack of speed breakers, proper traffic signals, and regular patrolling for the rising accidents. Every few months someone dies here, yet nothing change, claims a local. People are now demanding immediate safety measures like speed breakers, CCTV cameras, and strict checks on speeding vehicles so no more families lose their loved ones on this deadly road
