EC extends SIR deadline by a week, submission of enumeration forms by Dec 11

In a relief for election officials and voters, the Election Commission of India extends one-week to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, pushing the final deadline to February 14, 2026, in 12 key states and union territories including Bengal. This crucial cleanup drive aims to make voter lists more accurate by adding genuine new voters, weeding out duplicates, and verifying existing entries—ensuring every eligible citizen's voice counts in upcoming polls. The decision comes after pleas from opposition leaders, including from Trinamool Congress, who highlighted the immense pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) tasked with door-to-door verification.

Tragically, reports of BLO suicides in states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh underscored the need for more time, especially with Bengal's assembly elections looming early next year.Under the revised timeline, the enumeration phase—where BLOs distribute and collect forms—will now wrap up by December 11, up from the original December 4 deadline. The draft voter list, meant for public scrutiny and claims, shifts from December 9 to December 16, giving citizens extra days to check and correct details online or offline. States like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are among those benefiting, following a similar successful run in Bihar before its recent assembly polls.

This extension isn't just a scheduling tweak; it's a step toward fairer elections by easing the workload on ground-level workers who plays a vital role in democracy's backbone. The move is a compassionate response to real hardships, while others worry it might delay preparations for the winter session of Parliament starting soon. The Election Commission of India remains committed to a thorough process, urging all eligible voters to participate actively. As India gears up for more state elections, this extension could prevent errors that undermine trust in the ballot box, reminding us that strong democracy starts with spotless voter rolls.
