Woman falls from train on Howrah–Amta route, lies injured for two hours without aid

A shocking incident on the Howrah–Amta branch of the South Eastern Railway exposed severe negligence on Wednesday morning. Around 9:20 a.m., a woman fell from a local train travelling from Amta to Howrah and suffered serious injuries. She lay beside the tracks between Maju and Mahendralal stations, unable to move. Despite several trains passing during this period, no passengers or railway staff came forward to help her.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver of one passing train noticed the woman and even halted briefly, but chose not to step down or offer assistance. Local residents said the behaviour was “inhumane” and criticised the railway authorities for failing to respond despite clear visibility of the injured woman near an active railway stretch.

For nearly two hours after the fall, neither RPF nor GRP personnel reached the spot. Finally, after locals alerted them, officers from Jagatballabhpur police station arrived and took the woman to Jagatballabhpur Hospital, where she is now undergoing treatment.

Just days ago, a similar incident occurred near Domjur station, where a passenger fell from a train and failed to receive timely help. Frequent lapses in emergency response have left passengers increasingly frustrated with the railway’s inaction.
