A strong magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck on Saturday in a sparsely populated region near the border between Alaska and the Canadian territory of Yukon, according to the US Geological Survey.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake’s epicenter was located about 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and around 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Whitehorse in Yukon. The quake hit at a depth of around 6 miles (10 km) and triggered 20 smaller aftershocks.
Despite the strong shaking, both the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Weather Service confirmed that the event posed no tsunami threat to the West Coast or nearby coastal communities.
