The unnatural death of a research scholar from IIT Kharagpur has sent shockwaves through the campus. The victim, identified as Sravan Kumar, aged 27 and originally from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, was initially rescued from the side of a railway track before succumbing to his injuries later at a Kolkata hospital. Police have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, with questions arising about whether it was a case of murder, a simple accident, or some other unknown factor.
According to police and local sources, Sravan Kumar was found lying near the railway line close to the Puri Rail Gate, which connects Kharagpur Station and IIT Kharagpur, late on Saturday night. He was rescued by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Hijli outpost police officials and was immediately taken to Kharagpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was rushed to a private hospital in Kolkata for specialized treatment, where he sadly passed away on Sunday night.
IIT Kharagpur confirmed that Sravan Kumar was a resident of the Meghnad Saha Hall on campus. The authorities are currently unsure when or why he left the hall on Saturday night. Police are investigating various angles, including whether he was gravely injured by a passing train or if some other incident occurred. The key questions being pursued are why he went near the rail lines late at night, whether he was alone, and whether the incident constitutes murder or a tragic accident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and his family in Andhra Pradesh was informed following the discovery.
